Student story Cassi

At the HAS, Cassi discovered how her passion for nature, sustainability and hands-on learning can grow into a meaningful career—combining real-world experience, innovative research and personal ambition.

Why study at HAS

When choosing a university, I looked for a program combining hands-on experience with academic knowledge. HAS University of Applied Sciences stood out for its unique combination of horticulture and business management, which is an ideal match for my ambitions. Before my studies, I had already spent time living and working on farms — experiences that shaped my vision for the future. I imagined establishing a vineyard that would serve as a rehabilitation and education centre — helping people reconnect with the land and with themselves.

The HAS curriculum provided the foundation I needed. It gave me a solid grounding in the horticultural sector while also equipping me with the essential business skills to bring my ideas to life.

Internships

In my first year, I completed a one-month internship at a vineyard, where I immersed myself in the full lifecycle of grape production. I learned about irrigation systems, plant growth patterns, pest management, and wine-making processes—from fermentation to bottling. This early experience gave me a practical understanding of what vineyard management involves.

Later, I undertook a second internship in a greenhouse, where I was introduced to integrated pest management and biological control. It was there that a new fascination took root: entomology. I became captivated by the complexity of insects and their vital roles in agricultural ecosystems.

The future taking shape

This growing interest led me to the R&D department at Biobest, a company specialising in biological control. During my internship, I reared insects, assisted with field trials, and conducted my own lab experiment. Working with living organisms required adaptability and precision, as each day brought new challenges. Whether heading to a greenhouse or setting up trials in the lab, I found the dynamic environment at Biobest incredibly motivating. That experience confirmed my desire to pursue a career centred around insects and sustainable agriculture.

To deepen my understanding, I am currently taking part in a minor in Ecosystem Services of Insects at Wageningen University and Research. This course has broadened my perspective and reinforced my commitment to promoting biodiversity and ecological farming practices.

Looking forward

While my original dream of owning a vineyard still holds personal meaning, my focus has evolved. Today, I’m driven by a mission to support agriculture’s transition from chemical inputs to biological and sustainable alternatives. Reintroducing traditional permaculture principles and championing biodiversity are key strategies for building a resilient and regenerative food system.

My time at HAS has expanded my knowledge and reshaped my goals, aligning my passion for nature, agriculture, and sustainability. As I enter my final year, I will likely specialise in applied plant research. In this course, I will gain a solid understanding of Mendelian genetics, plant taxonomy, photosynthesis, plant hormones, water transport, gas exchange, and plant health. With every discovery, I become more inspired to advocate for holistic farming practices that honour the deep interconnections between all living things.

Together, we can cultivate a sustainable future that nourishes both our communities and our Earth.
