What about Soil - College 1

Healthy soils are the foundation for strong, resilient trees. For this What About Soil edition we invited two speakers presenting their research projects. Both projects explore how we can improve soil health and biodiversity to create more sustainable and resilient growing systems. They also show how cooperation between researchers, businesses, governments and education can help us prepare for climate change and other future challenges.

Silva Nova

We will start the evening with Sofia Gomes who will introduce the project Silva Nova (in English). Silva Nova explores how we can speed up the development of new forests established on former agricultural land. Turning farmland into forest is a long process, and newly planted trees have to develop together with the plants, microorganisms and soil animals that support a functioning forest ecosystem. The project investigates whether we can speed up this process by using soil inoculations to introduce forest-associated soil communities in the system. The project combines controlled experiments with large-scale field trials to test how these interventions influence tree growth, biodiversity and ecosystem development.

Weerbare laanboomsector

Het tweede verhaal van Teun van Lent gaat over een project in de laanbomenteelt (in Nederlands). De laanboomsector staat voor nieuwe uitdagingen, zoals klimaatverandering, strengere milieueisen en veranderende verwachtingen vanuit de maatschappij. Dit project richt zich op het duurzamer en toekomstbestendig maken van de laanboomteelt. Belangrijke thema’s zijn het verbeteren van de bodemkwaliteit, het telen van sterke en weerbare bomen, efficiënter omgaan met water en voedingsstoffen, het verminderen van emissies en een goede inpassing van bedrijven in het landschap.

Tree Centre Opheusden, Regio Rivierenland en HAS green academy werken hierin samen aan kennisontwikkeling en innovatie. Het doel is om samen te werken aan een gezonde bodem, sterke bomen én een duurzame en economisch vitale regio.
