Student Story Carlijne

Making a positive impact on the future of food and agriculture was one of the main reasons Carlijne chose International Food & Agribusiness (IFA) at HAS green academy. From calculating CO₂ emissions at a local farm to exploring sustainable tourism in Zanzibar, her journey has been driven by a desire to contribute to a more sustainable world.

Now that she's in her fourth year, she's looking back on her time at HAS. Carlijne feels IFA has given her the knowledge, international perspective and confidence to create meaningful change in the future.

Why did you choose IFA and how has that worked out for you so far?

I chose IFA because I wanted an English-taught, international program that goes beyond the current Dutch food and agriculture systems. I also aim for a career where I can truly make a difference in the world and leave a positive impact for future generations through my knowledge and efforts. Looking back on my years at IFA, I can confidently say that I made the right choice. I feel that my education has equipped me to create meaningful change in the future. One area that particularly drew my interest is water management within food and agricultural systems.

What would you advise potential students to join IFA today?

IFA has given me both motivation for my studies and a drive in life, alongside the feeling that I can make a long-term contribution to the agri-food system. I also appreciate the balance in the curriculum, it’s neither too general nor too specialized, allowing me to gain in-depth knowledge across multiple areas. Additionally, the atmosphere at HAS is fantastic. I don’t feel like just a number, but as a person. The relationships between teachers and students are strong, and I value that I can always walk in and discuss or brainstorm ideas. I feel genuinely known by my teachers. All of this together makes me excited to take the next steps in my academic and professional journey.

Can you tell us more about what internships you did during your study programme?

  • In my first year, I did an internship at Tuin de Es in Haaren, where I worked on CO₂ calculations for the company.
  • In my third year, I interned at No Waste Army in Breda, focusing on mapping agricultural waste streams from farmers and exploring how they could be transformed into sustainable products.
  • Currently, I am completing my internship at Under the Wave in Zanzibar, where I focus on sustainable tourism and raising awareness among people and organizations about making conscious choices, even while on vacation.

What are your ambitions for the future; any study or career plans?

After this, I would like to pursue a master’s degree in Marine Biology or study Public Administration. I would choose Marine Biology if I want to specialize in a specific field, and Public Administration if I aim to create change at a higher level. Ultimately, I could see myself ending up in politics, which also appeals to me.
