High Tech Agrosystems

In the minor programme High Tech Agrosystems you will work on real-life challenges in the agricultural and environmental sector to become more sustainable with the help of technology.
Start date
Study duration
20 weeks

About the programme

The agricultural sector has radically changed over the years. Cultivation of land has become more efficient because of advanced machinery, expanded scale and higher productivity of equipment. Yields have increased in all kind of sectors: from dairy farms to greenhouses. All kinds of smart technologies like robotics, vision techniques and machine learning help us further increase yields and improve efficiency.

However, the agricultural sector is not only focusing on yield and efficiency anymore. Sustainability becomes more and more of greater importance. For instance, a healthy soil is the foundation for ecological stability and, therefore, for sustainable crop production.

You will collaborate with students and lecturers from two universities: HAS green academy & Fontys University of Applied Sciences. Students of both universities learn from each others expertise, learn together and develop themselves to be professionals with up to date knowledge, expertise and skills which fits current technological developments in the agricultural and environmental sector.

In a multidisciplinary group project an active contribution is made to real-life innovations in cooperation with students, lecturers and partners from both the agricultural and technological sector. Practice-based applied research is combined with literature study, stakeholder conversations and application of techniques in developing prototypes. Furthermore every student works on an individual study to deepen their knowledge on a topic of their choice. This individual study is dependent on the future job or study the student is are aiming for, focused on content (biology and technology applied in the agricultural or environmental sector), skills and attitude. Supportive to the performance of the individual study, the student receives coaching from lecturers (HAS & Fontys) and meets professionals from the sector during guest lectures and excursions. The student can proactively ask for guidance from the broad expert panel of HAS and Fontys and the partners from the sector to come to a theoretical profound answer on the phrased research question.

So are you, for example, curious about;

  • how we can use vocalization technology in measuring animal welfare?
  • how we can use virtual plant modelling for harvesting in green houses?
  • how we can use drones in damage estimation of wild animals in arable farming?
  • how we can use vision technique to optimize training sessions in horses?
  • how we can use deep learning in recognizing nutrient deficiency in crops?
  • and many more other questions?

Then High Tech Agrosystems might be the minor for you!

Learning goals

  • Student knows the agricultural sector from a biological and technological point of view.
  • Student knows how to measure certain parameters of plants and/or animals and how to regulate the environment in order to influence the growth process and/or behaviour.
  • Student has made the link between in-depth theoretical technical knowledge and the agri-food practice and is able to advise clients on the use and application of techniques in the agri-food sector on the basis of experiments, research and prototypes.

Practical information

Practical information on the High Tech Agrosystems minor programme at HAS green academy:

  • Duration: 20 weeks
  • Date: February - July
  • ECTS credits: 30 ECTS credits
  • Language of instruction: English

Admission requirements

This minor focuses on third or fourth year Bachelor students with personal interest in biology and/or technology related to the agricultural and environmental sector. Basic knowledge of biology, technology or agribusiness is recommended. In consultation it can be discussed if to deepen some knowledge prior to the minor is necessary. An independent and proactive working attitude is recommended as well. Besides that, students should be willing to cooperate in a multidisciplinary environment. English speaking and writing skills are useful.

How to apply for an exchange programme, minor or specialisation
