Expertise & Research Centres (ERC) are knowledge groups within institutes of higher education that establish connections between education, professional practice and applied research in areas of social relevance. In most cases, an ERC consists of a ‘knowledge circle’: a group of lecturers and lecturer/researchers led by a Professor.

ERCs have several common goals:

  • Strengthening external orientation
  • Educational reform
  • Professionalisation of lecturers
  • Strengthening knowledge development and knowledge dissemination

  • Expertise & research centre in Plant-Soil Health

    The Expertise & research centre in Plant-Soil Health focusses on the interaction between plant and soil, with the main focus on the interaction between soil biology and the plant, and how this interaction can be used to make the soil healthier and more sustainable.

    Health innovation in the food sector is at the heart of the ERC in Food & Health. It represents a fascinating challenge in our society, where the increase in the number of people overweight and obese, and the associated chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer are the result of little exercise and overeating.

    The Expertise & research centre in Healthy Farming focuses on stirring up the dialogue between market, researcher and consumer with the aim of taking new steps towards the animal husbandry of the future. The ERC will conduct research into the problems caused by animal husbandry in combination with the high population density of the Netherlands, coming up with solutions using new technologies and concepts.

  • Expertise & research centre in Innovative Entrepreneurship in Rural Areas

    The ERC contributes to the upscaling of environmentally friendly agricultural systems. It also offers new, additional combinations of agriculture and nature. This enables nature and the countryside to play a more prominent role in the circular economy, the Biobased economy, sustainable energy, the agrifood supply chain, health care and public health, whereby the ERC works to provide practical applications.

  • Expertise & research centre Innovative Bio-Monitoring

    As the name suggests, the aim of the new research group is to apply innovative bio-monitoring techniques to concrete social issues, to validate them and to develop them further. The challenge is to look for new unexpected smart combinations and applications of techniques that make the detection and monitoring of species easy or easier, and which will contribute to the early and effective deployment of nature and other conservation measures.

    The primary goal of the ERC Protein Transition in Food is to contribute to the protein transition in the Netherlands. The focus is on plant-based proteins, but the ERC is also looking into how this knowledge can be applied on a broader, global level.

    The Expertise & research centre in Sustainable Protein Sources will spend the coming years working towards an insect and aquaculture (fish farming) sector that, from a veterinary point of view, is healthy, sustainable and safe. The ERC will establish a close collaboration between HAS University of Applied Sciences and Wageningen Bioveterinary Research.
